Prosthetic and Orthotic Care Tips

Daily Care for Your Device

Simple daily care can help keep your prosthetic or orthotic device clean, comfortable, and performing as designed.

  • 1. Clean Your Device Regularly

Wipe down your socket, brace, or orthotic device with a soft cloth and mild soap as recommended. Avoid harsh chemicals, cleaners, or anything that may damage the material.

  • 2. Care for Liners and Soft Goods

Liners, straps, pads, and other soft materials should be cleaned regularly and allowed to dry completely before use. This helps reduce odor, irritation, and buildup.

  • 3. Check Your Skin Daily

Look for redness, pressure spots, blisters, or irritation. If redness does not go away after removing your device, contact your prosthetist or orthotist.

  • 4. Inspect for Wear

Check your device for loose parts, worn straps, cracks, unusual movement, or changes in fit. Small issues can become bigger problems if they are not addressed.

  • 5. Keep It Dry and Protected

Avoid soaking your device unless you have been told it is water safe. Keep it away from extreme heat, direct sunlight for long periods, and areas where it could become damaged.

  • 6. Pay Attention to Fit Changes

Your body can change over time. If your device feels loose, tight, uncomfortable, or unstable, schedule a follow up with your prosthetist or orthotist.

  • 7. Follow Your Wearing Schedule

Wear your device as instructed, especially when you are getting used to something new. Gradually building wear time can help your body adjust safely and comfortably.

  • 8. Ask Before Making Changes

Do not trim, bend, glue, or modify your device on your own. If something needs to be adjusted, contact your prosthetist or orthotist for help.
